Course summary

Our International Year at Aston (IYA) programme offers a Certificate in Higher Education to international students in their final or penultimate year of undergraduate study.
We also welcome newly qualified graduates who are determined to continue their postgraduate studies after the IYA, and want to benefit from this ready-for-master’s programme.

The aim of the programme is to prepare the students for studying on master’s programmes in the UK and enhance their communication skills in academic fields of their interest. Most IYA students stay at Aston University to follow post-graduate study at Aston Business School, School of Languages and Social Sciences, Engineering and Applied Sciences, or Life and Health Sciences. Many students take up places in other UK universities or English-speaking universities around the world.

IYA students have the opportunity to create a programme that reflects their own particular interests through elective modules that explore their chosen academic and vocational subjects offered by different Aston’s Schools, including cultural aspects of life in the UK.

If you choose Aston, you will be studying at one of the UK’s leading universities, on a very friendly, green campus situated in the city centre of Birmingham, Britain’s second largest city.

Learning, teaching and assessment

International Year at Aston modules are delivered by a team of qualified, experienced and dedicated staff at Aston University’s Centre for English Language and Communication (CELCA). We are part of a larger academic group - Centre for Learning Innovation and Professional Practice (CLIPP). Our Tutors use a variety of innovative and engaging teaching methods which include lectures, seminars, interactive workshops, as well as individual and group tutorials. The IYA Social Programme provides opportunities for students to meet informally, travel to other cities and places of general and academic interest, celebrate significant festivals, engage in sports activities and join various student societies at Aston.
