Course outline and what you will study

This module will introduce you to the underlying theory of carrying out nerve conduction studies, evoked potentials and your role in clinical practice. It will enhance your understanding of relevant physiology, how different assessments are used to arrive at a differential diagnosis and build critical thinking.

Following successful completion of this module, you will be able to: 

  • Describe the applied anatomy and physiology of the peripheral nervous system
  • Understand the types of electrodes, and their characteristics used in electromyography and nerve conduction studies and evoked potentials
  • Describe the non-pathological sources of error and non-pathological effects on nerve conduction studies 
  • Describe the pathological changes in nerve conduction studies, clinical presentation and nerve conduction and electromyography changes in diseases of the peripheral nerves and skeletal muscle
  • Describe the potentials associated with electromyography 
  • How to recognise, measure and label, using the correct nomenclature, the major components of all modalities of evoked potentials used in the assessment of patients attending neurophysiology
  • The causes of error encountered and the non-pathological effect in the recording of evoked potentials and their elimination 
  • Present clinical presentations and uses of evoked potentials 
  • Visual:  Flash and Pattern Reversal techniques 
  • Understand Auditory brainstem and Auditory Cortical Evoked Potentials 
  • Understand somatosensory: Upper and Lower limb assessment 
  • Understand the diagnostic value and limitations of evoked potential techniques. 
Learning, teaching, assessment and staff

This course is delivered via distance learning. You will access learning materials for general study, revision and assessment via our virtual learning environment, Blackboard. This platform allows you to access a comprehensive range of study materials, scientific journals, e-journals, databases and much more.

Assessment is by coursework submitted throughout the course and will take the form of two short essays.

This course will provide the neurophysiology workforce with the ability to meet specific workforce needs in nerve conduction and evoked potentials. 

This module also links to and forms a part of postgraduate training programme for the NHS Accredited Specialist Scientific Practice Programme (ASSP) awarded as PgCert Neurophysiology.
