Course summary

Our recent graduates from this programme have gone on to work for industrial and commercial giants including Nissan, Alstom Power, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Royal Air Force and Royal Mail. 

The course concludes with a Business Project; a substantial piece of work designed to provide you with an opportunity to analyse a business problem and practically apply the knowledge and skills developed during the course.

Entry requirements

Duration of programme: 1 year full-time: six months of taught modules on campus and a six month individual project.

As well as:

  • Two professional references – at least one must be from an academic referee

  • A completed application form.

Course outline

MSc Supply Chain Management is delivered in a collaboration between the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Aston Business School which makes this course distinctive from other universities. You will receive a broader knowledge from academics across both schools who work closely with business and industry.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and applied perspectives of supply chain management and logistics, along with specific areas of supply chain management by studying specialist modules. These areas include: relationships, partnering, ERP, simulation, purchasing, contracts, planning and optimisation.

This programme requires you to study nine taught modules, plus the completion of a major project with a dissertation of up to 20,000 words. Each taught module involves up to 22 teaching hours including tutorials, case studies and guest lectures. The programme runs from October to September with examinations and assessments held in December, March/April and June. The major project occupies the final six months, being submitted in September.

Taught modules are complemented by a substantial piece of independent research leading to a 60 credit business projects. Students are allowed to decide on the particular topic for their business project.

The business project allows students the opportunity for extended application of the knowledge and skills acquired in the taught part of the course.

Learning, teaching and assessment


Assessment methods are designed to meet the particular requirements of each module. These methods vary from 100% examination to 100% continuous assessment. Currently the balance for the taught element of the course is approximately 65% examination and 35% continuous assessment. The major project accounts for 60 of the 180 credits required for successful completion of the degree.


At Aston University we encourage our students to learn by doing. Practical learning is important for solidifying theory and means our students graduate with real experience that will benefit their careers. As part of this course you will be encouraged to carry out real-life projects that support your learning. Modules are taught using industry-related case studies and current research in the field. We also welcome guest speakers from leading companies to share their experiences with you. Field trips to local businesses such as Jaguar Land Rover give you a real insight into the industry.

Course Director

David J Carpenter  
After his first degree, David qualified as a Chartered Accountant, subsequently specialising in acquisitions, mergers and takeovers. He has many years’ experience in teaching Supply Chain and Engineering Management subjects at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. David’s research interests lie in the fields of financial mathematics and jurisprudential aspects of the accounting-legal interface. He is published in several international journals.
