Meet with us

Involving the Family is your chance to hear first hand and ask questions about university life.

As a parent, you have an important role to play in helping your child to progress through their education and into the world of work. Having your son or daughter go to university can be a stressful time for both of you, especially if they are moving away from the family home. Many parents find it difficult to advise their child of their options regarding Higher Education, especially when they have no experience of it themselves. For you to be able to offer your child the best advice, you need to understand what university is all about.

What happens at Involving the Family?

‘Involving the Family’ is a project developed here at Aston University. We work with parents who perhaps have not been to university themselves or are from groups in the community who traditionally don’t attend university. Parents are given the opportunity to visit the Aston University campus, chat with current students and become familiar with the university environment. After looking around the University, including an example of student accommodation, parents can ask questions and discuss any individual concerns.

Our job is to help you to gain a better understanding of the university environment and to assist you to help your child to make the right decisions about their future.

It is widely recognised that children’s aspirations develop at an early age so we think discussions about Higher Education need to begin as early as possible.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you, as parents, to gain knowledge and experience of university so that you are able to support your son or daughter to think about future careers or Higher Education courses. With encouragement, future ambitions can help to focus a child on their school work and improve their attainment.
