Lakhan Gharu: Finance Assistant, The National College for High Speed Rail
Supporting the next generation of rail workers
After visiting an Applicant Visit Day, Lakhan Gharu was convinced that Aston was right for him, and selected Aston as his first choice of university. “The reputation that Aston maintains is what stood out for me. They are renowned for their business school, and the opportunities for employment after university due to the support they give. This is demonstrated by their high employability rates for graduates.”
As well as the university itself, Lakhan’s own aspirations led him to choose the BSc Business and Management course at Aston. “I have always wanted to pursue a Business career so that one day I am able to run my own company," he said. “The Business and Management course provides knowledge of a number of business areas, which has helped me see the areas I am proficient in.”
Lakhan was also attracted to Aston due to the integrated placement year which allows students to turn theory from their first and second year into practice, developing skills through work experience.
“It was highly competitive when I applied for placements. I used the resources provided by the placement team at Aston to apply for a range of roles. To remain visible, I ensured my CV stood out.”
For his placement year, Lakhan worked as a Finance Assistant at the National College for High Speed Rail (NCHSR). The college offers higher apprenticeships and courses to train the next generation of rail workers.
At the National College for High Speed Rail, Lakhan improved his skills in a range of areas. He said: “I have strengthened my communication and team-working skills as I have been involved in various tasks and projects, and I am the first point of contact for any finance related queries at the college.” Lakhan also supports across a variety of other departments, including Marketing and HR.
“My stand-out moment from my placement year was being part of the current process to procure and set up a new finance system. Working alongside heads of departments who have years of experience in this area has heightened my abilities and my confidence in creating innovative solutions.”
After university, Lakhan hopes to secure a position on a graduate scheme. “I now feel ready and equipped to work in industry and maintain a professional career. I feel confident and capable to take on anything with the advice and support I have received.”
