Robyn Hateley LLB Law placement

Law for competitive business advantage

After attending an Open Day, Robyn was convinced Aston University would be her first choice. "I was sure it was right for me due to the creative session provided by the law department, and the commercial orientated focus of the LLB Law course. I chose to study law because my ambition is to become a solicitor and I viewed it as a challenge."

During her first two years at Aston, Robyn attended various careers events that highlighted how competitive a legal career is, and how completing a placement year as part of her degree would provide her with skills that cannot be learnt in a lecture theatre.

Robyn worked at international law firm DAC Beachcroft for her placement year as a paralegal. Although the process of finding a legal placement proved challenging, Robyn believes her success at DAC Beachcroft was based on the strength of her CV and Aston University’s reputation and relationship with the firm.

Whilst working at DAC Beachcroft, Robyn had the opportunity to manage her own varied caseload, which is uncommon for a paralegal. Here, she saw the benefits of being able to apply her academic knowledge to real life cases. "This will allow me to go back into my final year with a real understanding of how the law actually works in practice." She said. "A lawyer is no longer just expected to advise on legal matters, we are also business advisors and the skill I’ve most developed has been my communication skills."

As a paralegal, Robyn provided support to solicitors and barristers by drafting court proceedings, calling clients, advising them on their cases and making decisions on whether to take a case to trial. "I believe my stand-out moment from my placement year will be when my first case goes to trial. Having this kind of responsibility is an impressive skill to have when applying for future roles."

As for after university, Robyn’s plans to become a commercial lawyer. "Aston’s business orientated law degree and my placement year has put me in a great position to achieve this."
