Aston taster sessions
Our taster sessions provide stimulating workshops from Aston University academics at the forefront of their subject area. These sessions offer a great opportunity for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students to enrich their current studies and to discover more about studying at university. The events not only allow students to explore their chosen subject area, but also the opportunity to meet our current undergraduate students to find out more about university life. 

This year, we will be running taster sessions across all five of our academic schools. Students are more than welcome to book on to these events individually and attend without teacher supervision but please make sure that you have read and understood our cancellation policy for these events. 

These events are for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students thinking about applying to study business and business related subjects at university. The day will include:

  • A welcome talk and introduction to studying at university
  • Two interactive subject taster sessions 
  • An insight from subject specific student ambassadors who will give their insight into studying at university
  • Optional campus tour with our current undergraduate students (3.30pm - 4.00pm) 

 

Aston Business and Law School events will be taking place on 

  • Wednesday 6th February 2019: 12.00pm – 3.30pm - Business and Economics   

During this event, students will experience an insight into studying Business and Economics through interactive taster sessions with Aston academics and current undergraduate students. 

  • Wednesday 3rd April 2019 12.00pm – 3.30pm - Law and Marketing 

During this event, students will experience an insight into studying Law and Marketing through interactive taster sessions with Aston academics and current undergraduate students. 

 

Taster sessions are free to attend but booking is essential and a maximum of 20 places per school/college will be allocated on a first come first served basis in the first instance.

These events are for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students thinking about applying to study Medicine at university. The days will include:

  • A welcome talk
  • Subject Taster Session in Medicine 
  • Optional campus tour with our current undergraduate students 

Aston Medical School events will be taking place this year on:         

  • Wednesday 13th February 2019: 12.30pm - 2.45pm (3.15pm with optional campus tour)
  • Wednesday 3rd July 2019: 12.00pm - 2.15pm (3.00pm with optional campus tour)

These events are for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students thinking about applying to study Engineering and Applied Sciences at university. The days will include:
  • A welcome talk
  • Subject sessions in areas such as Maths, Computer Science, Logistics and 3D Modelling 
  • Optional campus tour with our current undergraduate students 

Engineering and Applied Science events will be taking place this year on

  • Wednesday 27th February 2019: 12.00pm – 3.15pm  (4.00pm with optional campus tour) 

This day will allow students to take part in two separate Computer Science taster sessions:

Participatory Design of Smartphone Apps for Health - Related Behaviour Change and Learn How Computer Science Techniques are Used to Control Robots!


  • Wednesday 27th March 2019: 12:00pm - 3:15pm (4.00pm with optional campus tour)

This day will allow students to take part in one of three Engineering taster sessions:  

Strand 1 - 3D Modelling - Design your own house!

Strand 2-  Maths - What is Turbulence?  

Strand 3 - That's Logistics! - Logistics and Supply Chain Management in collaboration with Jaguar Landrover.

 

Taster sessions are free to attend but booking is essential and a maximum of 20 places per school/college will be allocated on a first come first served basis in the first instance.

These events are for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students thinking about applying to study Languages or Social Sciences at university. The days will include:

  • Introduction to studying at university
  • An insight from subject specific student ambassadors who will give their insight into studying at University, their university application, student life etc.  
  • Two subject sessions 
  • Optional campus tour with our current undergraduate students 
  • Option to eat packed lunches on campus  

  

Languages and Social Sciences events will be taking place this year on 

  • Wednesday 30th January 2019: 11:00-16:00 – Politics and International Relations; Sociology 

During this event, students will experience an insight into studying Politics and International Relations as well as Sociology at university. 

  • Wednesday 1st May 2019 9:00-13:00 – Languages 

 The subject session with focus on Languages. For the first session, students will have the option of choosing a specific language stream for their taster session: French, German or Spanish. The streams will re-group in the final session to attend a “Business in the global world” session, which will focus on how their language degree can be outside their main discipline.

These events are for Year 12 – 13 and Level 3 students thinking about applying to study Life and Health Science subjects at university. The days will include:

  • A welcome talk
  • Two subject sessions in areas such as Biology, Biochemistry, Psychology, Pharmacy and Optometry. 
  • Optional campus tour with our current undergraduate students 

 

Life and Health Science events will be taking place this year on: 

  • Wednesday 21st November 2018: 12.30pm – 3.30pm (4.00pm with optional campus tour) 
    The two subject sessions for this day are Optometry and Psychology.
  • Wednesday 21st November 2018: 12.30pm - 3.30pm (4.00pm with optional campus tour) 
    Additional Neuroscience taster session - limited spaces available.

 

  • Wednesday 13th February 2019: 12.30pm – 3.30pm (4.00pm with optional campus tour) 
    The two subject sessions for this day are Biological Sciences and Biochemistry.
  • Wednesday 13th February: 12.30pm - 3.30pm (4.00pm with optional campus tour) 
    Additional Neuroscience taster session - limited spaces available.
    Additional Pharmacy  taster session - limited spaces available.
