This week of BUCS fixtures saw twelve out of thirteen competing teams, fighting it out to book their next round places in the Cup. In one of the stand out results from this week Mens Badminton booked their place into the quarter-finals as they defeated Nottingham seconds 5-3. A great display by the team who will now be looking forward to the later rounds of the cup. Rugby seconds also put in a fantastic display as they narrowly defeated Nottingham Trent 13-12. In an exciting end to end game the Aston team managed to keep great composure and showed great nerve in a tightly contested encounter. The team can take great pride in their victory as they are one of only four Aston teams to make it into the next round. They too will be looking forward as the quarter-final round draw nears closer.
In what you could call the more domestic match of the week, Mens football seconds played the thirds for a place in the next round of the cup. The seconds were too strong for the third team as they came away 5-0 winners. The seconds continue their winning form from the league where they sit top, and are now looking for cup success on top of a strong league performance. Our Hockey 2nd team were also in cup action against the University of Leicester. A late assist and goal by Charlie Brewer secured a 3-2 win for the Hockey team.
In a surprising result, the inform Rugby firsts were comfortably defeated by the University of Nottingham. Despite a strong start Aston were outclassed by Nottingham who ran home 34-10 winners. Although the team will be disappointed with this loss, they can now concentrate solely on the league where they are strong favorites to clinch the league title.
In other cup results our Netball seconds traveled to Buxton to face the University of Derby. In what turned out to be an extremely close encounter Aston were narrowly defeated 28-27 having worked extremely hard to ensure the game ended with the score so close.
Overall it was a disappointing round of fixtures for Aston, however with the league fixtures starting up again next week, our teams have to put it behind them and concentrate on their league performances moving forward.
