Course summary

Business Analytics at Aston offers a unique mix of general business studies in the first year which acts as a foundation. The second and final years focus more on specialised business analytics’ tools and techniques.

This course offers a double degree option. Achieve two degrees for the price of one, and study abroad at one of our partner institutions.

Course outline

Business Analytics is one of the fastest growing disciplines in business studies and graduate business analysts are in high demand. The new BSc Business Analytics degree at Aston offers a unique mix of general business studies in the first year which acts as a foundation. The second and final years focus more on specialised business analytics’ tools and techniques.

You will study how analytical and computing tools can be applied in the business setting, to provide businesses with fresh insight and help tackle complex problems. The degree offers a balanced approach of teaching, hands-on practice and training in the relevant tools to prepare students for the wide variety of issues they are likely to face in their professional career. Our teaching staff are very research active with strong consultancy backgrounds and experience with business outreach activities, ensuring that the taught material is relevant, current and in demand.

Subject guide and modules

Year 1

In the first year you will study a mix of general Business Studies topics that will provide a foundation for the rest of your degree. Subject areas include Mathematics and Statistics for Business, Operations Management, Accounting for Business and Informational Technology in Business.

The core modules are:

  • Information Technology in Business
  • Introduction to Marketing Management
  • Principles of Operations Management
  • Statistics for economics
  • Principle of Macroeconomics
  • Principles of Microeconomics

Year 2

You will begin to specialise in business analytics subjects, tools and techniques that can be applied in practice. Subject areas include Optimisation and Decision Analytics, Data Visualisation, and Software for Analytics.

The core modules are as follows:

  • Optimisation and Decision Analytics
  • Business Analytics in Practice
  • Data visualization
  • Database applications 
  • Software for analytics (R and SAS)
  • Econometrics 1
  • Econometrics 2

Students must choose one module from the following options:

  • Systems Analysis

Year 3

This is when you will undertake a professional placement or choose an international study opportunity at one of our partner institutions. This year is compulsory for all UK and EU students.

Year 4
The final year continues with further specialisation in business analytics, with subject areas including Data Mining and Big Data, Simulation, Effective Management Consultancy and Performance and Efficiency Analytics.

Learning, teaching and assessment

Personal development

Our business degrees are designed to also give you a range of business skills needed to succeed within your chosen career. We make extensive use of group working and presentations to prepare you for the reality of working life. Such work develops your team working and negotiating skills.

The Aston placement year gives you genuine practical work experience that is invaluable in developing an appreciation of issues such as office politics which cannot be replicated in the lecture room. 

Assessment

Assessment is provided by a mixture of coursework and examinations.

Teaching

You will experience a range of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, group-working, case studies and both individual and group presentations.

Traditional teaching is supported by a virtual learning environment that is used to host a range of electronic supporting materials. For example, you have the option to undertake the Business Game module and compete in teams in a computer simulation exercise that culminates in a presentation to a panel of internal employers.

Placement year

Our four year course with an integrated placement during the third year gives you the chance to put theory into practice, gain relevant work experience, and develop professional and transferable skills.  

We have a dedicated Employer Team within our Careers and Placements department who have links with local, national and international organisations and advertise vacancies to students through an online platform exclusively for Aston students and graduates.  

The opportunity to undertake a study placement with one of our international partner institutions is also available if you would prefer.

Erasmus+

Study or work in another country

The University has secured Erasmus+ mobility funding for students going on placement during the academic year 2019/20.  For students planning their placement in the academic year 2020/21, Erasmus+ mobility funding will be dependent on the Exit date and whether a Withdrawal deal is agreed. The University’s Brexit information page is regularly being updated and will have the latest information.
