Course summary

Obtain the skills and knowledge to become a more autonomous neurophysiologist by studying MSc Clinical Neurophysiology Practice at Aston University. You’ll gain an accredited qualification recognising your expertise and develop the ability to improve and evaluate services for patients to ensure you become an advanced practitioner.

Key information, entry requirements and fees

Mode of delivery:  Part-time, blended learning. Students are employed within NHS Departments and released to undertake academic study. All teaching and learning materials are hosted online. You will attend on-campus teaching for:

  • First year: three days in term 1, three days in term 2, three days in term 3
  • Second year: three days in term 1, three days in term 2, three days in term 3
  • Final year: three days in term 1, three days in term 2, three days in term 3.

Duration: 3 years

Entry requirements:

  • We welcome applications from candidates interested in our course who have the skills and capability to excel. All candidates are considered on an individual basis based on their qualifications, experience, references and motivation.
  • A first or upper second class honours degree in clinical physiology or equivalent in a life sciences based subject e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology, physiology, physical science subject is required or, when outside the UK, a degree or qualification deemed to be at least of equivalent standing.

  • UK applications are welcome from in-service neurophysiology staff who do not meet the academic requirements.  Applicants must be registered with RCCP and will need a recommendation/supporting letter from their head of department. Candidates should have a minimum of 6-months service within a Neurophysiology department prior to starting the programme with exposure to the investigations within the selected module.

  • Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide evidence of an English language qualification. English language test requirements may be waived where students’ undergraduate degree was studied in an English speaking country. Find out more about our English language requirements.

Course outline and what you will study

The programme provides existing practitioners with the skills and knowledge to become more autonomous in their roles and have the ability to improve and evaluate services for patients – to become an advanced practitioner.

The modules are available by distance / blended learning, allowing you flexibility in the way that you study.

You have the option of taking each of the three stages of this course in order (PgCert, PgDip then MSc), or it is possible to exit the course at any of the stages, enabling you to be flexible with your level of commitment at the outset.

PgCert Level:

Mandatory modules*:

  • Introduction to Healthcare Science: The overall aim of this introductory module is to provide a broad knowledge and understanding of science and scientific knowledge, contextualised to the practice of healthcare science and the services provided by their healthcare science division/specialism.
  • Professional Practice:  This module will provide you with an opportunity to learn about healthcare science practice and its ethical and legal requirements.

You will also choose to take one of the following optional modules*:

  • Nerve Conduction and Evoked Potentials: This module will introduce you to the underlying theory of carrying out nerve conduction studies and evoked potentials and their role in clinical practice.
  • EEG in Practice: This module will enable you to understand the role of EEG in the management of adults and children.  

PgDip Level:

Mandatory modules*:

  • Evidence Based Practice: This module aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of evidence-based practice in healthcare and its role in service improvement.  Students are required to undertake NS2RM1.
  • Dissertation I – Research Methods: The overall aim of this module is to ensure that the trainee has the underpinning knowledge of the importance of research, development and innovation across the NHS and in healthcare science and in particular to provide the underpinning knowledge for the research project.
  • Dissertation II – Research Project:  The module aims to develop students’ skills in evaluating research, research design, analysis and interpretation.  The student will be encouraged to acquire an in-depth practical understanding of work that is at the forefront of research into healthcare science.  Students are required to undertake NS2RM1.

You will also choose to take one of the following optional modules*:

MSc Level:

Modules include*:

  • Dissertation III – Research Project:  In this module you will complete a research project that shows originality, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in neurosensory sciences.  It will build on the learning from the second year research modules.
  • Leadership for Health Management: This module aims to explore leadership within the context of clinical health.
  • Quality Improvement: This module aims to introduce you to the principles of quality improvement required for the delivery of high quality, safe healthcare.  The content reflects the World Health Organisation Patient Safety Multi-Professional Curriculum Guide 2011.

Learning, teaching, assessment and staff

All teaching and learning materials are hosted on Blackboard as this is a blended learning course. The majority of the teaching and learning material is delivered via the virtual learning environment (Blackboard 9).  You will be provided with a study guide for modules which ensures you are aware of what material needs covering when. 

Mandatory modules are mostly assessed via coursework so you are able to benchmark your abilities early on and to develop your skills in managing your learning. 

When on campus for short periods each term, you will have the opportunity to participate in group activities, tutorials, skills laboratories and seminars.
